Whatever your standard, you are welcome to enter the various club tournaments. The Men’s and Ladies’ Open Club Championships, Veterans' Championships and Junior Championships are held in March, the Gareth Pugh Memorial Handicap in November. Look out also for the Famous Fives team tournament, the Turkey Run at Christmas, and the Valentines Doubles in February.
The Famous Fives tournament consists of about seven teams of five players. The standard is controlled and it ranges from good to improver. Each team must include a lady and a junior. The teams initially play a round-robin with the good players playing each other and so on. The best four teams play a semi-final, followed by a final. Each match has the opposing team members shouting encouragement from the court balconies. The event takes up most of a Saturday and generally finishes with a light meal.
Players who still have a wooden racquet can play in the Wooden Racquets Tournament, which is always well attended. We have a few spare wooden racquets for players to borrow.
Tournament entry details are announced by email and posted on the noticeboard. For more details, please contact Tim Bointon.
